Piacenza, 1746

Plan von der Gegent Piacenza … 18th May 1746

1746 or later

Ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:30,000 approx. | RCIN 730038

A map of Piacenza showing the positions of the Spanish and Austrian armies on 18 May 1746. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top.

The Battle of Piacenza took place on 16 June 1746 between the French and Spanish army and the Austrians and Sardinians. This map shows the positions of the armies in May, together with fieldworks, around the city. This is a comparatively large-scale map, probably drawn by an Austrian draughtsman (the text uses Deutsche schrift) showing the positions of the encamped armies in relation to the micro-topography: cultivated fields, roads, hedgerows, drains, etc., all of which appear to be shown stylistically rather than resulting from an accurate survey.

Additional text: [following on from title, a key to the numbers and letters on the map, giving the regimental names of the encamped Allied army.]

Condition: four fold lines; trimmed; slight tear to right of central horizontal fold. Verso: worn along fold lines; surface dirt on outer fold panels.
